De Islas believes that we can be original under the influence of tradition and fashion trends alike. There is something unique about all of us, and that's what we want to encourage in you as we work to express creativity in visual art and textiles.
De Islas means “of islands” in Spanish because its 2 primary ambassadors originate from subcontinental lands. Surrounding waters make flux characteristic to islands, from weather anomalies to cultural heritage. An identity often shaped by migrated styles from all over, what we make looks and speaks of such fusion. De Islas is a project that continues to evolve through our comings and goings.
Our patterns are original collaborative artworks that seamlessly repeat. We create concepts from the drawing board that end up as rolls of fabric, materializing the artwork into a format that is both versatile and functional. We believe that a direct relationship between artist and consumer encourages originality from art to craft to merchandise.
Although unavoidable like the way different people walk, in an age of bioengineering and commercial ingenuity individuality is a challenge. That is why our attitude is that of voyage and discovery, navigating amidst influences and inspirations consciously acquired and those helplessly consumed, among learned skills and intuition, collective experiences and personal habits - we try to uncover buried uniqueness. We encourage you to appropriate our creations and explore your own designs with our materials. Have fun and take care, -elena + junko.
